narrative theory applied in a music video

this narrative applies with Kate Domaille (2001) theory of Tristan and Iseult: The love triangle, Man loves woman…unfortunately one or both of them are already spoken for, or a third party intervenes, e.g. Casablanca. this is because the main singer loves a girl, however the third arty (her father) wont have their blessing, however towards the end of the video the Romeo and Juliet genre applies because they get married in the end, a happily ever after.

this narrative also applies to the theory of Claude Lèvi-Strauss’ (1958) this is because it is about binary opposites- rich and higher class family not letting their daughter marry a poor lower class boy.

Tzvetan Todorov (1977)( the stages of this music video)
  1. A point of stable equilibrium, where everything is satisfied, calm and normal. this is at the start of the music video where the singer and his girlfriend is kissing in bed all happy.

  2. This stability is disrupted by some kind of  force, which creates a state of disequilibrium. this is when his girlfriend has to go back to her father, so he asks her father if he can marry his daughter.
  3. Recognition that a disruption has taken place. this is when the father says no "not for the rest of his life"
  4. It is only possible to re-create equilibrium through action directed against the disruption this is the part of the music video were he goes behind the fathers back, gets dressed up and asks her to marry him anyway.
  5. Restoration of a new state of equilibrium. The consequences of the reaction is to change the world of thenarrative and/or the characters so that the final state of equilibrium in not the same as the initial state. this is the end of the music vido where they get married without her dads blessing.

Sven Carlsson (1999) suggests in this narrative that music videos are performance and conceptual clips. the performance in this clip is a performance cliché because it is film in a garage which is popular place for music videos. such as:

  • Carly Ray Jepson - call me maybe
